If you are caring for a veteran or surviving spouse, the VA offers several programs that may provide financial support, training, and respite services for family caregivers. Eligibility requirements vary by program.
This is the VA's primary financial support program for caregivers of eligible post-9/11 veterans. It provides a monthly stipend, health insurance, mental health counseling, respite care, and more.
The veteran must have a serious injury or illness incurred or aggravated in the line of duty on or after September 11, 2001 (eligibility was also expanded to include certain pre-9/11 veterans — check with your VA for current status). The caregiver must be an adult family member or someone who lives with the veteran.
Contact the VA Caregiver Support Line at 1-855-260-3274 or visit caregiver.va.gov to begin an application. You can also reach out to the Caregiver Support Coordinator at the Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center in Muskogee or the Tulsa VA Outpatient Clinic.
This program supports caregivers of veterans enrolled in VA care — regardless of when or where the veteran served. It does not provide a stipend, but offers education, peer support mentoring, coaching, and connections to community services.
Veterans and surviving spouses who receive a VA pension may be eligible for the Aid & Attendance benefit if they require assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, or mobility. This benefit increases the monthly pension amount and can help cover the cost of in-home care or assisted living.
