Program for Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC)

This is the VA's primary financial support program for caregivers of eligible post-9/11 veterans. It provides a monthly stipend, health insurance, mental health counseling, respite care, and more.

Who May Be Eligible

The veteran must have a serious injury or illness incurred or aggravated in the line of duty on or after September 11, 2001 (eligibility was also expanded to include certain pre-9/11 veterans — check with your VA for current status). The caregiver must be an adult family member or someone who lives with the veteran.

What the Program Provides

  • Monthly caregiver stipend (based on the veteran's level of need)
  • Health insurance through CHAMPVA (if not otherwise covered)
  • Respite care — up to 30 days per year
  • Mental health counseling and support services
  • Caregiver education and training
  • Access to VA caregiver support coordinators

Services Include

  • REACH VA — a skills-building program for caregivers of veterans with dementia
  • Caregiver peer support mentoring program
  • Building Better Caregivers online workshop
  • Referrals to respite care and community resources

Aid & Attendance Benefit (Pension)

For Veterans & Surviving Spouses Who Need Daily Help

Veterans and surviving spouses who receive a VA pension may be eligible for the Aid & Attendance benefit if they require assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, or mobility. This benefit increases the monthly pension amount and can help cover the cost of in-home care or assisted living.
